FAQs About Volunteering

What is the minimum age to volunteer?
Most volunteer shifts are for 13 years and older.
For volunteers between the ages of 13 and 15, a parent must be present for the volunteer shift.
For volunteers 16 and 17 years of age, a parent must be present for the first volunteer shift.

Children of all ages are welcome to participate during the Family Nights in December and for Sack Summer Hunger deliveries in June, July, and August. These shifts are generally posted and available to for sign up one to two months before the schedule dates.

Where will I go for my volunteer shift?
Volunteer shift locations vary based on activity. Locations are generally noted during registration. You will also receive an email one to two weeks prior to your schedule date with the detailed information for your shift, including the address. If you are unsure where to go, please email the Volunteer Manager.

Do you have weekends or evenings volunteer positions?
Yes. Most weekend and evening shifts are available through seasonal programs. In between seasonal programs, weekend and evening shifts are limited. Volunteer positions may be available with the food pantry or our Metrocrest Resale store on Saturdays or with GED tutoring on Tuesday or Wednesday evening.

Are background checks required?
Certain positions require a background check prior to volunteering. These positions help with our Home Delivered Meals, Transportation, and Minor Home Repair programs.

Can I work my court-ordered volunteer hours at Metrocrest Services?
Yes, court ordered volunteers are welcome to volunteer in our food pantry or at our Metrocrest Resale store. Orientation is available every Thursday at 2:00pm at 13801 Hutton Drive, Suite 150 Farmers Branch. Shifts are available in the food pantry Monday – Friday 8:00am-1:00pm or 12:00pm-5:00pm.

Shifts are available at our Metrocrest Resale store Monday – Thursday and Saturday 9:00am-1:00pm, 1:00pm-5:00pm, or 5:00pm-7:00pm. Volunteers at the store are most often used as assistance on the donation truck and therefore must be able and willing to help with donation pick ups, including loading items such as sofas, washer, dryers, and tables.

Can my group volunteer?
Seasonal programs offer the most options for groups. Groups are also needed to assist with minor home repair projects, Saturdays in the food pantry, and for other special tasks. For more information about scheduling your group please email the Volunteer Manager.

Can I fulfill requirements for high school, college, or my social organization?
Yes. The best options for students or individuals needing a set number of hours are with seasonal programs or the food pantry.

How do I apply for an internship?
Metrocrest Services offers several internship opportunities. To apply, please email your resume and cover letter to the Volunteer Manager.
