Every third Thursday of the month, more than 60 seniors gather for an afternoon of friendship, learning, food, and connection through Metrocrest Services’ Golden Groceries event.
“Golden Groceries started as a way for seniors who use the pantry to learn about nutrition and get to know one another,” shared Andrea Hewison, Senior Services Coordinator. “What has grown from that simple idea is a strong sense of community.”
For many older adults, social isolation can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health. Many of the seniors served by Metrocrest Services live alone, making opportunities for connection especially meaningful.
“By combining a trip to the food pantry with lunch and time to connect with others, we’re helping create a space where seniors can build relationships and feel supported,” said Hewison.
Each month, participants enjoy lunch, a cooking demonstration, and educational presentations focused on health, wellness, and safety. Transportation assistance is available for seniors who do not have reliable access to transportation, helping ensure those most at risk of isolation can participate.
Community partners also play an important role in the program by sharing practical information on topics such as fall prevention, low-impact exercise, Medicare benefits, and energy-saving strategies. In June, guests enjoyed a “Beat the Heat” presentation from Reliant Energy along with a fresh summer recipe demonstration from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.
“I had such a great time,” shared Carol, a Golden Groceries participant. “Please let all those who helped know that all their time and effort is appreciated.”
After the presentations, seniors enjoy a lively game of Bingo with prizes before shopping the pantry for nutritious groceries to take home.
“We are so grateful for the staff, volunteers, community partners, and sponsors who make this program possible,” said Hewison.
