Who doesn’t love to shop? Kathy Thompson, a volunteer with Metrocrest Services, counts on the fun of shopping – and sharing great finds via social media — as an important way she can help those in need.

Thompson volunteers with Metrocrest Resale, a local boutique specializing in name-brand clothing, housewares, and home furnishings at 60% to 80% off retail pricing. Most importantly, all proceeds support Metrocrest Services, the non-profit agency that specializes in helping individuals, families, and seniors navigate through crisis situations and works to stabilize their lives for a brighter future. In the store, customers find a unique and diverse array of items, which Thompson says is key to the store’s success.

“I go up to the store at least two or three times a week to get photos of the items to post on Facebook,” Thompson said. “You never know what you will find! I wish I had $1 for every time I’ve been wandering through the store and I overhear a shopper say, ‘Oh, I just love this store!’”

A resident of Addison for 12 years, Thompson retired from the City of Carrollton and then worked as the marketing manager for Metrocrest Services. After retiring from Metrocrest Services in 2003, she chose to stay on as a volunteer. Thompson has served many different volunteer posts for the agency, including answering phones, helping people locate jobs, and, today, she uses her social media skills to post pictures of interesting merchandise to the @MetrocrestResale Facebook page.

“Everybody can do something, and it’s fun!” Thompson said of volunteering. She recommended grabbing a friend and signing up for one of the many different volunteer shifts at Metrocrest Services to get a better idea of the programs available that can use your skills, interests and time available.

“If you have a little time, why not share it? There are a lot of opportunities to help people who need help, and Metrocrest Services has it all organized,” Thompson said. “Find your spot and do what you can.”
