Community gathering spaces are integral to creating a thriving community for all. This was the resounding message guests heard during the 18th Annual Keyholder Breakfast on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. At the event, over 500 guests enjoyed a dynamic discussion from a panel of experts on how investing in shared community spaces cultivates opportunities for individuals to connect with one another, learn, and grow.

Joseph W. Dingman, MBA, CPA, financial executive, and community innovator, shared information on an innovative housing project in Dallas, St. Jude Center Park Central. The project combines housing and intensive case management for unsheltered residents of Dallas County. The people who come to live in the apartments have lost their family, friends, and sense of community. The program is different from other housing projects as it provides residents with an opportunity to regain that sense of community and develop long-term, sustainable plans for the future.

Dr. Hee Soun Jang, associate professor of public administration at The University of North Texas, discussed research she completed for her book Public Non-Profit Collaboration and Policy in Homeless Services, published in late 2022. As part of her study, she looked into the collaboration between government, and private entities, including non-profits, that are essential to effectively tackle challenges such as housing instability, food insecurity, healthcare access, and underemployment.

Justin Bashaw, design director, studio director, and senior associate with Gensler, designed the exterior of Metrocrest Services’ new home, opening later this year. During the breakfast, he spoke about the importance of public places, like libraries and parks, in strengthening the social fabric of the community. Additionally, he shared with the audience how the design of Metrocrest Services’ new building was created to be warm, inviting, and welcoming to all.

After the panel discussion, guests enjoyed a sneak peek of Metrocrest Services’ new strategic plan, Metrocrest 2030. The plan allows the agency to look beyond the endless cycle of crisis response and attempt to diminish the chances of financial crises occurring in the first place. Providing pathways to a thriving community for all.

“While a very different format from our last 17 Keyholder Breakfasts, we hope those in attendance left with a renewed sense of the importance of public spaces like libraries, parks, and recreation centers. Along with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the future of Metrocrest Services,” shared CEO Tracy Eubanks.
